Configure the Zebra GK420d Label Printer

I am no friend to printers.  We are living in a digital age.  But I can get on board with label printers that print barcodes on labels.  I just don’t always enjoy getting them set up, especially when it was the Zebra that used ribbons in the printer. This one does not, thankfully.

Here’s what seems to work for me every time for the GK420d.

  1. Unbox the printer, obviously, and get it connected to power.
  2. Install a roll of label stock and close the lid. Here I’m using a 2″ x 1″ label.
  3. Press and release the Feed button on the printer.
  4. Press and hold the Feed button until the light blinks TWO times.
  5. Now we will configure the print area for the label stock we have installed. This step is going to print a series of boxes.  Let the boxes continue to print until the area covers as much of the label as possible.

  6. To begin this print area configuration press and hold the Feed button until the light blinks 5 times then release.  Once the desired area prints press the feed button again.
  7. Test your print area now by printing a configuration page.  Press and hold the the Feed button until the light blinks one time and then release. Now you have a configuration page that is readable to find your DHCP assigned IP address on your printer so that you can reprogram it with a static IP address.
